The Shawnigan Lake area offers a variety of land and water-based sports and activities for all ages and ability levels.

You don’t have to wander far from home to experience the diverse activities that has made Shawnigan Lake such a desirable destination for sports and recreation.

On the Water

Experience a range of boating and rowing options, including kayaking and canoeing on the lake. Shawnigan Lake has become a destination for rowers, from the annual Regatta hosted by Shawnigan Lake School, to Rowing Canada’s local club, the lake is hugely popular for its size and convenient setting nestled in nature, while still close to urban populations.

Parks & Recreation

Around the lake, there are a variety of locations for public access and recreation; Masons Beach Park, Old Mill Park, and Shawnigan Wharf Park are all venues offering swimming, playgrounds, trails, beach access and/or boat launches.

The expansive trail system around the Shawnigan Lake area is attractive to not only hikers and bikers, but adventure enthusiasts, with designated trails for dirt biking, all terrain vehicles (ATV’s) and off-roading.If you enjoy horseback riding, Alpine Stables is located right next to Shawnigan Lake in Cobble Hill.

The Shawnigan Lake Community Centre offers a variety of indoor activities from its location on Shawnigan Lake Road. Including a dance studio, gymnasium, and multipurpose rooms, the community centre offers classes and indoor recreation year-round.

Golfing

If you enjoy golfing, then there are plenty of courses in the area to satisfy your need. Such courses include: Cowichan Golf and Country Club, located just before Duncan on the Island Highway; Duncan Meadows Golf Course, located just north of Duncan and Arbutus Ridge Golf and Country Club.

Skiing and Alpine Trails

washingontIf skiing/snowboarding is your thing, you won’t need to travel far. Mt. Washington Alpine Resort is located approximately 2.5 hours north of Shawnigan, making for a beautiful scenic drive. In the summer, Mt. Washington offers a variety of hiking trails along with downhill biking to visitors.
